Yasin Hassan

Immigration Case Manager

Yasin was born and raised in New York, and understands the importance of protecting and advocating for the immigrant population. She first fell in love with working with the immigrant population of NYC during her time as an immigration legal intern with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) during her Junior year of college. There, she came across individuals from all backgrounds and life experiences, and empathized with their experiences as they traveled to the United States. As an intern with the IRC, she helped immigrants complete applications to USCIS and worked as an Arabic translator for Middle Eastern clients. As the new Immigration Case Manager with YAMA, she will hold monthly webinars educating the public about a range of topics such as their rights and how to apply for specific statuses, conduct intake for immigration application process, work as an Arabic translator, and more. She looks forward to assisting and advocating for the Yemeni community of New York.

Yasin has completed her B.A. in Political Science at Hunter College as well as a Human Rights certification in 2019. She completed her thesis on the lack of correlation between refugees and crime rates across the United States, and has consistently been a strong advocate for different immigrant and migrant groups. She was a former Grove Fellow, Janovic scholar, and has over 6 years of experience in human rights advocacy and community organizing. She has fundraised for underprivileged populations and has organized community events for all parts of the Middle Eastern community, both domestically in the United States as well as overseas. She has interned for a wide variety of other organizations, such as PULP (The Public Utility Law Project), where she aided low income individuals in addressing utility concerns/issues and Generation Citizen, where she taught youth from underprivileged communities the importance of grassroots politics. She has also spent years working with students to ensure they academically succeed by helping them edit their term papers as well as assist future employees with the cultivation of their resumes, cover letters and more.
