Staff Member
Abraham Aiyash
Executive Director
He is an accomplished community organizer, effective nonprofit leader, and an innovative leader. His life’s work has always had one guiding principle: to give people a shot at their best, most dignified life. Whether that is through teaching, non-profit work, or advocacy, it will always be his North Star.
Previously, he served as the Statewide Training and Political Leadership Director in Michigan, Detroit where he oversaw the organization’s candidate and staff training programs as well as provided guidance for the organization’s political strategy. Prior, he served as a forum organizer where he organized voter education forums for over 400 people, largely in the Yemeni community in Dearborn, Detroit, and Hamtramck.
Abraham was the least known and youngest candidate in a field of 11 in one of the most diverse Senate Districts in the state. He challenged the Detroit School Board President, three former State Representatives, the former chief of staff to the incumbent State Senator, and the Hamtramck Mayor Pro-Team, among others. He placed second with nearly 25% of the vote, falling short by just 26 votes in Election Day voting to the candidate that had $250,000 in individual expenditures from a dark money group supporting his candidacy.
He was a founding member of the JAMES MADISON COLLEGE INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY COMMITTEE | EAST LANSING, MI committee, the first of its kind at MSU. There, he organized and enacted sweeping reforms to address issues of bias and prejudice both in the classroom and across the campus at Michigan State, particularly for minority students and students of color. We initiated changes to faculty evaluations and created a reporting system for bias incidents for students.
He worked closely with the immigrant communities in Hamtramck and Detroit and relayed updates and concerns to and from the OFFICE OF STATE REP. ROSE MARY C. ROBINSON Representative.
He served as the youngest member of any city HAMTRAMCK RECYCLING COMMISSION in Hamtramck’s history. He started a plastic and paper recycling program in Hamtramck Public Schools by securing funding from private donors and worked on recycling and waste education with immigrant communities to expand access of the city’s recycling services.
Abraham graduated from James Madison College at Michigan State University — Political Theory & Constitutional Democracy, Pre-Medical Sciences, Muslim Studies
